A Glorious Day for a Run

Jun 08, 2014

The Race

Sunday 8th June saw our 3rd annual run around Carsington Water! This 12.5km (7.76mile) run is different from others in that it has the wonderful setting of Carsington. Although, along with the scenic views come the hills!

After the thunderstorms of the previous day we were bracing ourselves for the possibility of more rain but instead woke up to sunshine after the showers of the night before. Breezy sunny weather - perfect! Our staff and wonderful volunteers were onsite from 7am setting up the event and the first runners began to arrive to register at 8am. Here are a few of our volunteers during the day!  Why don't you join in and come have some fun with us at our events, we really do have a fabulous time and make lots of new friends too.

At 9.20am the runners headed up to the start line, and at 9.30am the siren signalled the start. The club runners headed off first as they seriously like to better their times year on year, those just wishing to take exercise in a splendid location and join in the fun followed in their wake.  The conditions were a bit tough. The thunderstorms and rain from the day before had left the ground soft and muddy, the sun was hot and there was more than a little wind. But all the runners took it in their stride and really gave the race their all!

Everybody was in good spirits, and despite the difficult nature of the course (hills, hills and more hills!) all the runners were excited about the challenge. Many of the runners had taken part in the race in previous years and were looking forward to beating their personal best time.

The winning runner, Ben Livesey, crossed the line in just over 44 minutes - a new course record - and decided to run it again! We can honestly say that that was a first for us! Afterwards Ben told us that he couldn't pass up the opportunity to run at such a beautiful location.

As always, there was a great atmosphere around the race and all runners were supportive of one another.

The Spin

Whilst the main race was taking place, we had a one mile 'Stones Island Spin', suitable for children and adults. Spot the (slightly odd looking!) dog (shown below) led for a short time before he was overtaken by the winner who completed the spin in an incredible 7 minutes! All the children and adults who took part in the Spin were great sports and what a wonderful way to spend time with your children on a Sunday morning!

Thank you!

We have a few big thank yous to make. Firstly, thank you to all the runners for taking part - we hope to see you next year! Thank you to all the volunteers who make everything we do possible. Thank you to Severn Trent for allowing us to use Carsington Water to host our event - they agreed to us running the event again in 2015, so please keep an eye on our website for the date which will be published before in the next month or two.

This year we would also like to thank Running Form who sponsored the trophies and race numbers!

A few other organisations were very kind and donated goods:

- iPro donated sports drinks
- Eden Springs donated water
- 9bar donated energy bars for all runners

If you are a corporate and would be interested in sponsoring the event next year as Flint Bishop did in 2013 please contact Vicotoria for the sponsorship deals available - igm@rspcaderby.org.uk

We hope that everybody who took part enjoyed the race and hope to see you all again next year!
