What is Bark in the Park?

Jun 17, 2016

It's getting to that time of year again - the temperature is rising, the sun is shining and we're all counting down to Bark in the Park! Our annual fun dog show with classes, stalls and information will be taking place on Sunday 26th of June at Markeaton Park from 10am to 4pm. So what makes Bark in the Park such a popular event?

What is the purpose of Bark in the Park?

Bark in the Park is a fun dog show that encourages people to bring their pooches along and have a great day out! We aim to promote responsible pet ownership and give advice where we can. The classes are intended as a bit of fun, with various categories to suit every dog owner. The event is popular and gets bigger every year, which is great for the centre as it raises vital funds to help the animals in our care.

Do you have a dog that you would like to bring down? We love seeing past residents and meeting new faces! The event is very dog friendly and we run a variety of classes to enter so everybody can have a chance - however it is first come, first served and each category is limited to 30 dogs (otherwise it's impossible for the judges to choose!) so make sure you're here from 11am for registration. Each class costs £3.00 to enter, with all funds raised going back into the centre to care for unwanted, abused and neglected animals. The classes we are running this year are:

-Waggiest tail - do you have a super happy dog who's always wiggling that tail? Then they just might be the winner of our waggiest tail class! We love to see a happy pooch, so a ring full of them is brilliant!

-Best set of gnashers - healthy teeth are a must for this round, as we check for pearly whites and dogs that are happy to have their teeth checked by our judges. Get ready to smile!

-Happiest vintage/in-betweenie/puppy - we welcome dogs of all ages to get involved! Do you have a prime example of a puppy (under 1 year), in-betweenie (1 - 7 years) or elderly dog (over 7 years)? Then we want to meet them.

-Dog that most resembles owner - people say dogs look like their owners, and we have a category just for that reason! Do you have an uncanny resemblance to your furry friend? The best lookalikes will win!

-Handled like a pro - this class runs in both Junior and Adult classes, where we ask owners to display their skill and special connection with their dog to follow the judges directions. Does your dog have a knack for picking up instructions? We want you to wow us!

-Prettiest bitch/handsomest dog - of course everybody thinks their dog is the best looking dog in the world, but if you think your pet truly is stunning then enter this class. We will be looking for a healthy coat, bright white teeth and clean claws.

-Best Staffie/Staffie cross - as everyone knows we love a Staffie! We always aim to overturn the stigma surrounding the breed so we've got an entire class dedicated to these heart-face beauties! All Staffies and Staffie crosses are welcome.

-Best 6 legs - this one requires a bit of creativity, as we want to see some matching legs! We'll be looking out for owners with matching legs to their dog (yes, that's 6 matching leg warmers or whatever else you choose!).

-Rescue dog of the day - get the tissues ready! Have you adopted an animal from a rescue centre? Then we would love to have you in this round! You'll get a limited amount of time to describe your dog's story and how you've helped them.

-Dog of the day - our grand finale! We round up the 1st place winners from every category and attempt to pick our number one dog of the day. This is a tough one for the judges, that's for sure.

Rosettes are rewarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. We will have a range of judges on the day to make sure things are kept fair! More details about times etc. can be found here.

Want to come down without a dog? No problem! There will be plenty of stalls to browse through to keep you busy, and food and drink available for when you get hungry. For the kids there will be games, face painting, bouncy castles and a slide to choose from! Fun for all the family.

Bark in the Park is definitely one of our most popular events for a reason - you'd be barking mad to miss it!
