Elderly cats find retirement home together
Authored on: 13 March 2023
Tom (aged 17) and Barbara (aged 11) came to us in September 2022 as their previous owner became too unwell to look after them. They were both quite skinny and a bit under the weather, so they had a check-up with our vet. It was confirmed that they both needed dentals, blood tests, and lots of TLC. After a few weeks of rest and extra meals, they were both feeling well enough for treatment. Tom needed a scale and polish, while Barbara had to have several teeth removed. Blood tests revealed that Tom was slightly anaemic, had hyperthyroidism and had elevated liver levels, while Barbara had a heart murmur and an issue with her breathing. Both needed ongoing medication and Tom needed a prescription diet to manage his liver function.
Once they were well enough, they were advertised for adoption, but after a few weeks with no interest, our Cattery Team Leader, Mat, decided to take them on foster so they could enjoy the comforts of a quiet home while waiting to find their forever family. Older cats and cats with health issues are much harder to rehome... and Tom and Barbara ticked both boxes, so we knew we would be in for a long wait.
Weeks passed with no suitable applications, but Tom and Barbara were enjoying their time with Mat, spending their days snuggling in their favourite spot on the sofa.
133 days later...
We finally received a suitable application! The potential adopters weren't put off by Tom and Barbara's ages or health issues, so we were keeping our fingers crossed that the meet would go well... It was a huge success and finally, after 19 weeks in our care, Tom and Barbara left to start their retirement together in their perfect home.
